Rikers scald assault
A city correction officer was attacked by an inmate at Rikers Island, suffering burns and a broken nose during the ambush, officials said Sunday.
J’Von Johnson, who is awaiting trial for murder and assault charges, threw scalding water on the unidentified officer and punched him repeatedly in the face as the guard completed his tour of the Enhanced Supervision Housing unit at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, according to Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen.
The officer was treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital.
Johnson was behind an assault on another officer in the same unit last year, the union head added.
Husamudeen blasted Mayor de Blasio and recent Correction Department commissioners, appealing to the public advocate.
“We have come to expect zero action from the mayor and his correction commissioners over the past four years,” his statement read. “So, we are calling on . . . Public Advocate and the entire . . . City Council to act now to protect us. The mayor is willing to have the blood of correction officers on his hands, are you?”
City Hall referred requests for comment to Correction spokesman Peter Thorne, who said, “Outrageous attacks like this, on an officer just doing his job helping keep the rest of us safe, are exactly why this inmate was immediately placed into more restrictive custody. This inmate will also be arrested and face serious charges.”
The Public Advocate’s Office did not return a message.
It was the fourth assault on a Rikers guard since Feb. 10.
