President Trump continued his all-out assault on two former top FBI officials in a series of blistering tweets Sunday, railing about fired FBI Director James Comey lying under oath and ousted Deputy Director Andrew McCabe penning “Fake Memos.”
“Wow, watch Comey lie under oath to Senator G when asked ‘have you ever been an anonymous source...or known someone else to be an anonymous source...?’ He said strongly ‘never, no,’ ” Trump tweeted, referring to Sen. Chuck Grassley.
The president spent the weekend on Twitter ripping both McCabe (top), who was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday, and Comey.
McCabe, in a statement, said his ouster is part of the Trump administration’s continuing effort to discredit the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
His lawyer on Sunday said he wouldn’t respond to each “childish” tweet from the president, saying the truth will eventually emerge despite how Trump “has corrupted” the process.
In his Sunday Twitter attack, Trump took aim at memos McCabe kept of the conversations he had with Trump and which he has turned over to Mueller.
“Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me. I don’t believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date. Same with lying James Comey. Can we call them Fake Memos?” Trump wrote.
Sessions fired McCabe two days before his retirement was to take effect for allegedly lying to Department of Justice investigators and for leaking information to the media.
