Cops ‘testalie’ under oath

- By CHRIS PEREZ

NYPD cops have been caught “testilying” under oath on more than two dozen occasions since January 2015 — with some giving blatantly false accounts about witness identifications, and others wrongly claiming that they watched crimes taking place, according to a report.

The false testimony was uncovered during an investigation by The New York Times through interviews with lawyers, police officers and judges.

At least 25 instances were found where judges or prosecutors reportedly determined that a cop’s testimony was likely untrue.

In many of the cases, officers, in an attempt to cover up their illegal searches and seizures, re- portedly gave false statements about drugs being in plain sight.

In other instances, cops allegedly lied about seeing weapons in suspects’ hands or waistbands, when, in fact, they were out of view.

“Behind closed doors, we call it testilying,” said NYPD Officer Pedro Serrano.

“You take the truth and stretch it out a little bit.”

Most of the cases identified by the Times are sealed, but some have made headlines.

In one case, two detectives were indicted earlier this month for malconduct for allegedly lying about a drug deal in Queens.

An NYPD spokesman said there were only a “small handful” of such cases each year, but they were all “troubling.”
