Sports writers in Daily News layoffs

- Keith J. Kelly

There were 21 people given the old heave-ho at the Daily News recently — and the cuts were not confined to design and production people.

Sources said the Mighty Quinn author was among those let go.

The irreverent column about sports betting was written by Robert Quinn, a veteran sports writer.

Quinn could not be reached for comment before press time.

The sports desk also lost Gary Myers, a veteran of nearly three decades and the author of “The Catch” and “My First Coach,” in which NFL quarterbacks talk about their dads.

“I am leaving the NY Daily News after 29 years. I’ve enjoyed covering the run from Parcells to the Butt Fumble to present day & am so appreciative of all who have read my work, whether you agreed or disagreed with my opinion. Thank you to all who supported me through the years,” Myers posted on Twitter.

The design and production people are going to see their jobs consolidated at a universal desk in Chicago that is run by parent company Tronc, which is the owner of Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun and the Allentown Morning Call.

The company recently lost its controversial chairman, Michael Ferro, who resigned Monday only hours before allegations of sexual harassment surfaced from his days as a high-stakes investor before he emerged as the chairman of Tronc.
