Calling all adults to Silicon Valley

- Jonathon M. Trugman

APPARENTLY there is a shortage of employees with a certain qualification in Silicon Valley, and we may need a new Visa designation to find them.

It’s called grown-ups. And they seem to be in short supply there, as witnessed over the past three weeks.

Grown-ups take responsibility for their actions. Grown-ups don’t send others to explain their actions.

Facebook boy wonder Mark Zuckerberg could use additional adult supervision since Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has remained mum on the topic of Cambridge Analytics’ use of user data in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

On the flip side of the coin, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has shown the Valley’s social media tyros what it means to protect user data.

Apple, through its wildly successful hardware and services, already knows exactly what kind of music we all like.

It knows what we search for on Safari, what numbers we call and who we text and FaceTime on our iPhones.

But with its extraordinarily advanced encryption, Apple keeps these things private on behalf of their rightful owners — the users of its products and services.

Cook went so far as to battle the feds in order to keep your information private.

Besides the Facebook/Cambridge Analytics issue, it’s been reported that on Android OS devices, Facebook has been logging who you may have called and texted. Is nothing sacred?

Zuckerberg & Co. also reportedly saved videos that you recorded on your smartphone but did not share on the social platform.

While Facebook has proven that it can make a great social media platform, the recent non-actions by Zuckerberg and Sandberg show they have much to learn from the adults in the Valley about how to safeguard their clients’ information — or at least about how to answer for their actions.
