NYCHA ‘ignores’ resident felons

- Emily Saul

The city Housing Authority repeatedly turns a blind eye to violent felons living in its buildings — despite scathing government reports since 2015 detailing the problem, said the Department of Investigation commissioner Sunday.

Calling the New York City Housing Authority “dysfunctional,” DOI chief Mark Peters questioned the agency’s commitment to keeping residents safe.

“Earlier this year, we did a very long-term investigation in which we arrested 18 people, including several NYCHA employees, and a number of other people for running a violent drug gang out of NYCHA housing,” Peters (right) told radio host John Catsimatidis, referencing a January bust in the Sheepshead Bay-Nostrand Houses in Brooklyn.

“In fact, one of the NYCHA employees we arrested actually got the drug dealers back into the NYCHA apartments so that they could use them as their base of operations,” he said.

“Several of these violent gang members, in fact, had long arrest records, long conviction histories.”

Peters said NYCHA was well-aware of the presence of the violent offenders yet did nothing, despite the DOI’s reports reaching back to 2015.

“NYCHA simply refuses to take action to keep the rest of NYCHA tenants safe,’’ he said.

NYCHA did not return a request for comment.
