Severity of Swarzak’s injury still under review

- By FRED KERBER

Compared to their history, the Mets came out of their first series of the season in remarkable shape — only one new pitching injury. And it’s not yet clear the extent of reliever Anthony Swarzak’s sore left oblique.

The righty, who suffered the injury Saturday, was further evaluated Sunday. And he’s due for more tests, including an MRI exam on Monday.

“I feel good,” Swarzak said optimistically, but admitted he has no clue as to the extent of any damage. “I think it’s too early to tell. … I don’t know, but it’s cold out there today. I didn’t really feel too much of a difference, so maybe that’s good because it doesn’t feel worse.

“They said I get to see more doctors tomorrow, so that’s good,” said Swarzak, who was limited in spring training by a left calf strain and could not speculate on his latest setback.

“I’m not a doctor,” he said. “It feels like I had to get taken out of a game. That’s how it feels. … I work really hard in the offseason and I worked as hard as I could in spring training around the little calf issue that I had. It’s frustrating to be kept off the mound for an oblique injury that, from everything I’m reading and everything that I’ve been told, is kind of a fluke thing.”

In other medical news, Jason Vargas, down with a non-displaced fracture of the hamate bone in his right-glove hand, is scheduled to throw a simulated game Monday. Vargas worked a light bullpen session Saturday.

“We’ll get him up and down a few times and go from there — if it doesn’t snow,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “We’re going to get him up and down a few times and we’ll see how he’s feeling. If he can go up, down four times, we’ll get him up and down four times.”

Wilmer Flores got his first start of the season, batting fifth and playing first. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

“It happens,” Flores said of his hitless day, noting manager Callaway pinpointed the start for him on Opening Day.

“With [Cardinals starter Luke Weaver], I thought Flo matched up pretty good to- day,” Callaway said beforehand. “We’re going to pick spots where Flo needs to play. The kid can hit.”

Dominic Smith, who suffered a strained right quad that wiped out his spring training, headed for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.

It’s Matt Harvey’s turn in rotation Monday when he starts the series against the Phillies at Citi Field, opposed by Ben Lively.

“I think he’s going to go out there and throw the ball over the plate and give himself a chance,” Callaway said of Harvey.
