Snow way: Yanks move home opener to today

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Let’s call this Snow-pening Day.

The Yankees postponed their home opener Monday after a few inches of snow fell early in the morning to blanket the field and the seats.

The Yankees called the game just before 9 a.m. The game against the Rays has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. The gates open at 2 p.m.

The snow forced new Yankees manager Aaron Boone to delay his Stadium debut. When he woke up Monday morning, Boone saw the snow coming down and figured first pitch was in doubt.

“Huh, it really is 100 percent chance of snow at 7 a.m,” Boone said of his initial thoughts when he saw the snow. “I peeked out the window. My daughter and wife were sleeping in there. I thought, this is going to be interesting.”

As Boone drove to The Bronx he became more convinced the Stadium would remain dark Monday.

“It was really coming down,” he said. “Obviously, [I’m] not surprised to get here and hear that it was called pretty quickly. It was going to be quite an ordeal to have any kind of a chance.”

Snow was not something Giancarlo Stanton ever had to worry about when he was with the Marlins. He said he remembers one time in Minnesota when temperatures were in the 20s, but not snow.

“I’m ready to go,” Stanton said of his mindset when he woke up. “You’ve got to keep the same mindset that we’re ready to play until you get confirmation. I’ve had times where I look out and I’m like, ‘There’s not a chance,’ and you kick back a little bit and sure enough you’re out there playing.”

The Yankees said they chose a 4 p.m. start Tuesday because of the rain that is in the forecast for the morning.
