Snow forces Yanks to face Rays’ best hurlers

- By DAN MARTIN

Not only did the snow postpone the Yankees’ home opener, it also made the series against the Rays a bit tougher.

Instead of facing Austin Pruitt, who has started just eight games in the majors and isn’t even in the Rays’ rotation, the Yankees will have to go up against Chris Archer on Tuesday and Blake Snell on Wednesday.

They’re Tampa Bay’s top two starters in an otherwise beaten-up rotation that was already down to four starters before exYankee Nathan Eovaldi was lost to another elbow surgery.

Aaron Boone said Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash called him Monday to give him the update.

Boone said he also thought about bumping Jordan Montgomery from Tuesday’s start and replacing him with Luis Sever- ino, but opted not to do it after talking with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

“Larry and I talked about the possibility [of switching],” Boone said after Monday’s home opener was postponed in The Bronx.

“That would have put [Severino] on regular rest,” Boone said. “We felt like this was built in for [Montgomery]. When we can give our guys those five [days rest] and keep [Montgomery] on his regular turn, we’ll do it. But we did consider it.”

As for Archer, he’s 6-7 with a 2.96 ERA in 17 games against the Yankees in his career, including 3-3 with a 3.13 ERA in nine outings at Yankee Stadium.

Contrast those numbers with Pruitt’s, who gave up a dozen runs — 10 earned — to the Yankees in just 7 2/3 innings a year ago. And 10 of those runs — nine earned — came in 6 2/3 innings in The Bronx.

“We prepare for the club,” Boone said of the switch.

For a team that didn’t produce a ton after the first game in Toronto, it’s an added challenge — but they do have the plus of facing a Rays lineup that scored just three runs over its last three games against the Red Sox and is one of the worst in the American League.
