Deal nets Bombers another outfielder

- By DAN MARTIN

The Yankees are hopeful Aaron Hicks will be back from his oblique injury by the time they open their series in Boston on Tuesday, but in the meantime, they continue to collect outfielders to add depth.

A day after they claimed Trayce Thompson off waivers from the Dodgers, the Yankees acquired Cody Asche from the Royals for a player to be named later or cash considerations. They sent Asche to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Asche also plays third base, but he spent 57 games in left field for the Phillies in 2016. With Triple-A Charlotte a year ago, the left-handed hitter split 39 games between left and right, but he went just 6-for-57 with the White Sox last season. He signed with the Royals in December.

Hicks was scheduled to take swings from both sides again Wednesday, but has yet to face live pitching.

“I feel really good,” Hicks said before the Yankees’ 7-2 win over the Rays.

Hicks added he is confident he won’t need any rehab games before he is activated, but Aaron Boone isn’t as sure.

“That’s something I think we’ll weigh over the next few days,’’ the manager said. “We do feel he’s in a good place and progressing the right way. … We’ll just try to weigh that as the week unfolds, but it seems like something gonna be on the shorter end.”

With Jacoby Ellsbury now in Tampa dealing with a hip injury and Clint Frazier still out after a concussion, the Yankees have been forced to go with Brett Gardner, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the outfield every day.

“The urgency’s there because of that,” Boone said of the injury situation. “But we’re not gonna expedite [Hicks’ return just] to expedite. We want to feel really good that he’s really healthy.”

Boone wouldn’t rule out the possibility Thompson could join the Yankees in The Bronx before Hicks gets back.

“He’s at Triple-A, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t become an option very soon,’’ Boone said.
