Apple’s new start begins Monday

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

When it comes to Eli Apple and his troubled 2017 season, new Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Dave Gettleman have already said the young cornerback has a clean slate.

The offseason workout program opens Monday, and when it does, that clean slate starts for Apple, whose immaturity surfaced in his second NFL season, lowlighted by his onegame suspension.

“Day 1 is Monday,’’ new defensive coordinator James Bettcher said Wednesday. “So, whatever happened before — whether it was here or whether it was with a different team, guys that we draft, whether it was in college — whatever it was that has happened with guys ... Day 1 is the first day those guys walk in the building, and we’re going to build from there.”

Ereck Flowers is entering his fourth year with the Giants and will be working with his third offensive line coach. Up next, it is Hal Hunter’s chance to get through to Flowers, who turns 24 this month. At least Hunter — who has coached the offensive line for the Chargers, Colts and Browns — does not have to try to get Flowers to become a better left tackle, as Flowers is making the switch to right tackle after the signing of Nate Solder, Tom Brady’s blind-side protector at left tackle with the Patriots.

It will not be an easy adjustment.

“It might not be quite as hard, but it would be like, I golf righthanded,’’ Hunter said. “If all of a sudden I have to go golf lefthanded, it’s gonna be a while. He’s been playing left tackle for a long time, played it in college. The footwork’s gonna be different, everything’s just gonna be the opposite. He’s a good enough athlete that he’s going to be able to adjust to all that. There has to be a patience on the learning curve.”

Bettcher said he will work during games from the sideline, as opposed to positioning himself in the press box.

“Eye contact,’’ he explained. “I need to hear your problems.”
