Hernandez bursts onto Twitter scene

- By MIKE PUMA

WASHINGTON — Keith Hernandez was a Gold Glove first baseman and remains a popular Mets analyst on SNY, but his true calling may have been discovered this week. That’s Keith Hernandez, Twitter phenomenon.

In four days since reactivating an account he began in 2015 with the social media platform, Hernandez has gained more than 30,000 followers.

“It’s sick,” Hernandez said. “It’s like a nuclear reaction.”

Hernandez uses the Twitter handle “@kher8286” and is employing the platform in part to promote a website featuring Keith Hernandez merchandise. But he is also using Twitter to interact with fans and show more of his personality.

“Just saw that Charlie Blackmon signed a juicy extension with the Rockies,” Hernandez recently tweeted. “If I played in Denver, I’d never want to leave. I played at old Mile High Stadium in 1974/75 when I was twenty/twenty-one and a mere 185 pounds.”

Hernandez has also posted updates about his travel exploits, and Thursday added a picture from manager Mickey Callaway’s pregame press conference. Hernandez’s cat Hadji has also been a popular topic.

And Hernandez hasn’t been afraid to show his devilish side.

“I want everybody to know that I’m following Michael Kay and he has just informed me that David Cone is upset I’m not following him,” Hernandez tweeted. “I did that when we played together and it got into nothing but trouble! But I’m willing to follow again. So I’m following George.”
