Red-hot Dotson ignites Knicks

- By MARC BERMAN

The Knicks’ other rookie guard lit up the Garden in historic fashion.

Shooting guard Damyean Dotson, the Knicks’ second-round pick last June, erupted for a career-high 30 points in 32 minutes, and hauled in 11 rebounds as the Knicks destroyed the listless Heat, 122-98, Friday night.

With the crowd buzzing when he got the ball and the Knicks often employing a four-guard offense, Dotson became the team’s first rookie since Patrick Ewing to put up a 30-and-10 game.

“This means a lot going into the offseason,’’ Dotson said. “It shows my continuous work and persistence and staying with it and believing. It gives me an up, makes me excited what’s coming further.’’

Dotson made 12 of 21 field goals, connecting on 4 of 10 from 3-point range.

“We actually practices yesterday the same way — spacing the floor, the four guards, have fun,’’ Dotson said. “I was prepared for it. It was amazing.’’

Dotson, from the University of Houston, has been out of the rotation this season and played 13 games in the G-League. It was Dotson’s 41st appearance as a Knick.

“What he’s working on is his ball-handling and moves to the basket, but defensively he’s [a] big, strong kid who isn’t afraid of getting up on people,’’ coach Jeff Hornacek said.

Rookie center Luke Kornet also caught fire, scoring a career-high 20 points, making 4 of 6 from 3-point land. The Knicks (28-51) sank a season-high 18 3pointers and are down to three games left.

Tim Hardaway Jr. suffered a sprained left ankle, rolling his foot late in the third quarter and crumpling to the court. X-rays were negative.
