Top prospects Barkley, Mayfield visit Big Blue

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

It was quite the power dinner Sunday night as the Giants entertained not one, but two of the top prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. They dined with Saquon Barkley, the No. 1 running back, and Baker Mayfield, who could very well be destined to play quarterback for the Jets.

As part of their 30 allowed pre-draft visits, the Giants continue to bring through the highest-rated players, as they have the No. 2 overall pick, their highest selection in 37 years. Barkley, the 233-pound dynamo from Penn State, is unquestionably on the Giants’ radar, as he is considered a generational running back and would fit general manager Dave Gettleman’s criteria as far as being a player who far down the road could be projected for Hall of Fame status.

Mayfield, the prolific passer from Oklahoma, is not very likely to find his way to the Giants, as the expectation (at least here) is that they will bypass a quarterback in the first round to take an immediate impact-making player at another position. The Giants are doing their due diligence on all the top-level prospects, and will bring every one of them in for visits. They played host last week to defensive end Bradley Chubb and will also bring into the building Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen, the other top-rated quarterbacks.

After eating dinner Sunday night with members of the coaching staff, Barkley and Mayfield will spend most of the day Monday at the Giants’ facil- ity, meeting with coaches and front-office personnel. Later in the day, Mayfield will make the short ride from East Rutherford, N.J, to Florham Park to meet with the Jets.

Monday morning, new Giants head coach Pat Shurmur opens up the offseason workout program, with a high percentage of the players on the roster expected to attend. So, Barkley and Mayfield during their tour will undoubtedly get a glimpse of and perhaps a few words with Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr.
