Gleyber’s start makes promotion ‘possible’

- By GEORGE A. KING III

DETROIT — With Brandon Drury still on the DL due to migraine headaches and blurry vision, and Tyler Wade, Neil Walker and Miguel Andujar not hitting, stud infield prospect Gleyber Torres is on the Yankees’ radar for a possible promotion, although Aaron Boone didn’t sound like it would be this week.

“I would say anything is possible and we have conversations about that kind of thing. But possible? Yes,” Boone said. “Likely? Not necessarily.’’

Torres, who had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last summer and didn’t play well in spring training, has started strong for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In 10 games the 21-year- old infielder is batting .385 (15-for-39) and has been used at second base, shortstop and third base. “I think he is playing well and the last couple of days have been better. I have been watching a lot of his at-bats and the last couple of days he has gotten better,’’ Boone said. “Obviously, with Gleyber we watch closely. To see him playing well, healthy and off to a good start is certainly something we take notice of.’’

Due to Sunday’s rain washing out two Yankees-Tigers games, the players didn’t get a chance to honor Jackie Robinson by wearing the No. 42 jerseys. One idea floating around the Yankees’ clubhouse on Sunday was asking MLB to grant permission for the Yankees and Tigers to wear No. 42 when they make up the games on June 4.

Luis Cessa was scheduled to start the second game of Sunday’s twinbill, but instead got a ticket to SWB with an eye on getting the right-hander to be ready when the Yankees plan to use a sixth starter.

“We need to get him pitching and keep him built up because we want him to be an option for us, probably as a sixth man that we will insert in the next 10 or 12 days,’’ said Boone, who didn’t say definitely that Cessa’s replacement would be a pitcher.

The Yankees will need another move on Thursday when CC Sabathia is scheduled to come off the DL and start against the Blue Jays at home.
