Mike pays $4M US climate tab
Climate-change crusader Mike Bloomberg announced on Sunday that he’ll pony up $4.5 million to fulfill the annual US commitment under the 2015 Paris climate-change agreement.
Since President Trump last year announced the US withdrawal from the international deal to limit greenhouse emissions, the billionaire former mayor (right) has stepped forward to fill in the funding gap.
“America made a commitment and, as an American, if the government’s not going to do it, we all have responsibility,” Bloomberg told CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “I’m able to do it. So, yes, I’m going to send them a check for the monies that America had promised to the organization as though they got it from the federal government.”
Bloomberg serves as the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for climate action.
The $4.5 million will support the operations of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, which helps other countries implement their Paris Agreement commitments.
The UN program had anticipated $7.5 million from the United States, but Congress allocated just $3 million, so Bloomberg said he’d make up the difference, adding he hoped Trump wouldld be willing to fund climate-changenge efforts next year.
“Hopefully by then, President Trump will have changed his view, which would be great,” he said.
“A personn that doesn’t change their mind isn’t very smart.”
Bloomberg’s announcement coincided with Earth Day onn Sun-Sunday.
