2nd surgery unlikely to affect Collins’ camp

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

One of the Giants’ most valuable and indispensable players will not take part in any of the team’s activi t i es t his spring. Safety Landon Collins on Monday underwent a second surgical procedure on his fractured right forearm and, after a six-to-eight week recovery period, he is expected to be able to participate in late July at the start of training camp.

Collins fractured his forearm Dec. 24 in Arizona and soon thereafter had surgery to repair the break. It did not heal properly, thus the need for a second procedure. He posted on Instagram a picture of himself Monday in a hospital gown.

This is a big season ahead for Collins, as he is entering the final year of his four-year, $6.1 million rookie contract and is in line for a huge deal, if he plays to the level the Giants expect of him. A 2015 second-round draft pick out of Alabama, he was a legitimate NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate in 2016, named first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl starter. His 125 tackles were a Giants’ record for a safety and he was the first NFL safety in 16 years to record 100-plus tackles, at least f ive interceptions and at least three sacks. Collins, 24, did not make the same impact in 2017. Still, he is viewed as a fixture on a defense that is now directed by a new coordinator, James Bettcher.

Second-year WR Darius Powe was waived. He spent most of last season on the practice squad, then broke his foot making his first NFL catch, Dec. 10 versus the Cowboys. He stayed in the game and had one more reception before exiting and landing on injured reserve the next day.
