NORTH KOREA SUMMIT

- Yaron Steinbuch

President Trump on Tuesday said North Korea wants to hold a high-stakes meeting “as soon as possible” — and praised dictator Kim Jong-un as “very open” and “very honorable.”

During his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, Trump addressed his upcoming plans to meet with the rogue regime’s leader.

“He really has been very open and I think very honorable from everything we’re seeing,” Trump told reporters. “Now a lot of promises have been made by North Korea over the years, but they have never been in this position.”

Later, at a joint press conference, the president said the Hermit Kingdom had already made concessions — but the United States had not.

“A lot of concessions have already been made,” he said. “We have made no concessions, despite some of the media saying that I’ve made concessions. I don’t — I haven’t even discussed a concession other than the fact that meeting is a great thing. And I’m sure that a lot of other people would have liked to have had the position we’re having.”

Trump’s praise for the despot stands in stark contrast to his past comments, in which he referred to Kim as “Little Rocket Man” and boasted about the size of his own nuclear button.

Kim at the time fired back by calling Trump a “mentally deranged US dotard.” Their meeting is expected in May or June. South Korean President Moon Jae-in plans to meet with Kim on Friday to kick off a new round of high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with Pyongyang.
