Boone says Gleyber ‘under control’ at plate

- By DAN MARTIN

After going hitless in his first game, Gleyber Torres has shown at least some of why the Yankees have been so high on the second baseman.

In Tuesday’s 8-3 win over the Twins, Torres had a pair of singles for his first multi-hit game and added his first RBI.

“I feel like with Gleyber, outside of the first at-bat [in his debut] where you could tell he was anxious, you could tell he was running out there a little bit, I think he’s really been under control at the plate,” Aaron Boone said after Torres’ third game for the Yankees. “And I think he’s had a lot of good passes, even balls he’s popped up or grounded out. I think he’s in a pretty good place right now.”

Both of his hits on Tuesday came on 3-2 counts.

Boone has also liked the way Torres has handled all the attention.

“I think that’s part of the hype around him, is the makeup of it,” Boone said. “He’s a slow heartbeat, special between the ears kind of guy.”

The night wasn’t perfect for Torres, who made his first error, when he didn’t catch Gary Sanchez’s throw while covering first on a wild play in the seventh that cost the Yankees a run. “I tried to tag the runner too fast,” Torres said. “I lost the ball.”

Tyler Austin is still awaiting word of his impending suspension stemming from this month’s brawl in Boston, but he and Boone know it’s coming soon — and that could lead to more at-bats for Neil Walker.

Boone is optimistic Walker, who was back at first base Tuesday after sitting the previous two games, would start producing.

“This is a really good hitter, especially from the left side,” Boone said of Walker, who has two hits in his last 25 at-bats. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Tuesday and made his first error of the year.

“Getting him going is important because he adds length to the lineup as a switch hitter,” Boone said.

After making 18 errors in their first 17 games, the Yankees were miscue-free for four straight games before Tuesday. But the shaky defense returned with four errors — as well as a misplay in the left-center that dropped between Aaron Hicks and Brett Gardner that allowed Max Kepler to reach on a double. The four errors were their most in a win since Aug. 6, 2014 against the Tigers.
