Simms: Skip on taking a passer
Former Giants great Phil Simms would be “very surprised” if the Giants select a quarterback with the second overall pick on Thursday night and would understand why they didn’t — and here’s why:
“What if he goes out there in the preseason and he just lights it up?” Simms told The Post. “Then [Eli Manning and] the Giants start out 0-2. And what are we gonna hear? What’s Steve Serby gonna write? ‘Well I think it’s time to see the second pick in the draft, we gotta see, we gotta see.’ The fans ... so there’s many things.
“You talk about distractions. When you draft a quarterback really high, it’s gonna be a distraction until he plays.”
An d the Gi a n t s , wh o had plenty of distractions last season and still have to answer Odell Beckham Jr. questions, are trying to eliminate the off-the-f ield issues.
“The Giants are trying to clean all that up, in my opinion. They’re trying to get this team stabilized,” Simms said. “Get the Odell Beckham Jr. situation straightened out and settle all that stuff down.
“And the only story that’s gonna be written if they draft a quarterback at No. 2 for the next six months is gonna be: ‘Well this quarterback, what do you think about Eli?’ ... You’re gonna write it three times a week.
“It becomes a distraction and a headache to the whole organization.
“Knowing the league and knowing Twitter and the fans and the media and talk radio and on and on and on, everything lends me to believe what I read, what the Giants say, that I don’t think under any circumstances they’re gonna take a quarterback with that second pick. That’s my guess.”
