Kimbrel, Red Sox hold off Rays for 20th win

Sandy Leon hit an opposite-field, go-ahead RBI single inside the third-base bag with two outs in the eighth inning against Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome, lifting the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory in Boston on Sunday that snapped the Rays’ eight-game winning streak. It also made the Red Sox (20-7) the first team to reach 20 wins this season.

J.D. Martinez had four singles and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, but misplayed a fly ball into a double that put runners on second and third in the eighth before Craig Kimstruck out Brad Miller to end the inning. In Pittsburgh, Nick Kingham accomplish­ed something only one major league pitcher had achieved in the past century. In his big league debut, Kingham carried a perfect game into the seventh inning to lead the Pirates to a 5-0 win over the Cardinals. He joined Johnny Cueto in 2008 as the only pitchers in the past 100 years with one hit allowed, at least nine strikeouts and no walks in his debut.

In San Francisco, Evan Longoria hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Ty Blach made the early lead stand up, pitching the Giants past the Dodgers 4-2.

Cody Bellinger had two hits for the Dodgers before manager Dave Roberts benched him for what he called a lack of hustle after the first baseman pulled up while legging out a double in the fifth.
