Giants far from done with roster

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

The Giants were able to get a jump on most of the NFL as far as scouring the undrafted free agent market. The draft ended inordinately early for the Giants, as they made their final pick early in the fifth round, meaning they had a few hours to make a list of who they wanted to go get, and then waited to see if those players were left undrafted.

“Part of this, part of the exercise, is creating competition — bringing in players to create competition,’’ general manager Dave Gettleman said. “Listen, the roster process isn’t over. It’s not over, and you build your roster. Roster building is a 12-month period. So am I happy with where we are right now? Yes. Do we have some needs? Yes. Do I want us to be better? Yes. It takes time. ... This is a brick-bybrick deal, and at the end of the day we’re going to keep making moves, shake up the back end of the roster until we get it right.’’

It was somewhat surprising the Giants did not go for a cornerback in the draft and not at all surprising they will bring one in to take a look at. They will sign Grant Haley, a three-year starter at Penn State, which will certainly please Saquon Barkley, another former Nittany Lion. Haley is only 5-foot-9, but is considered especially strong as a slot corner, a position of need for the Giants.

After the Giants took Kyle Lauletta from Richmond in the fourth round, Shurmur said he wanted to sign a fourth quarterback and it will be Thomas Sirk. He is a big guy (6-4, 235) and was a two-year starter at Duke before finishing up at East Carolina as a grad transfer.

The Giants will also sign the fo l l owing undra f te d pl aye r s , according to various social media reports: WR Davon Grayson (East Carolina), C Evan Brown (SMU), LB Tae Davis (UT-Chattanooga), OT Nick Gates (Nebraska), WR Jawill Davis (Bethune-Cookman), CB Aaron Davis (Georgia), S Sean Chandler (Temple), TE Stephen Baggett (East Carolina).

The Giants also invited Army offensive tackle Brett Toth to their rookie minicamp May 11-12 on a tryout basis, but Toth is waiting to see if he can sign with an NFL team. Toth, who went undrafted, was a two-year starter for the Cadets and has impressive physical skills, but he cannot play in the NFL for two years. He graduates as a second lieutenant and will deployed as an engineer in the U.S. Army. He has a mandatory two-year commitment to fulfill.
