Syndergaard to make next start Tuesday

- By MIKE PUMA

PHILADELPHIA — Noah Syndergaard normally would have taken his turn in the rotation following a rainout, but the previous night’s circumstances prevented it Sunday.

All along Saturday, the Mets were led to believe their game against the Phillies would begin as scheduled. But shortly before the scheduled first pitch, the game was de- layed by weather concerns and then postponed by rain before it even got started. Syndergaard had already partially warmed up in the bullpen, and manager Mickey Callaway didn’t want to risk injury to the right-hander by asking him to return a day later.

“He’s never pitched the day after he’s done that,” Callaway said before the Mets lost 4-2 to the Phillies. “There’s a little wear and tear there, so we decided to keep things as they were [and start Jacob deGrom] and then move Syndergaard to Tuesday.”

That start will come at Citi Field against the Blue Jays — who traded Syndergaard to the Mets as part of the R.A. Dickey trade following the 2012 season.

Callaway indicated the Mets weren’t told until 12 minutes before the scheduled f irst pitch Sat- urday that the game would be delayed.

➤ Dominic Smith was summoned to the manager’s office after the game and informed he will be optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, as Jay Bruce is prepared to return from paternity leave. Smith went 0-for-1 in a pinchhitting role Sunday. On Friday he entered as a pinch hitter, but was left standing at the plate as Jose Reyes was picked off first base to end the inning.

➤ Jeurys Familia entered in the eighth inning with the Mets behind 3-2 and surrendered a leadoff homer to Carlos Santana. Familia was used, according to Callaway, because the Mets were rained out Saturday and have a scheduled day off on Monday. The right-hander had not allowed a run since receiving a blown save against the Cardinals on April 26.

➤ Buddy Baumann was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas before the game to clear roster space for deGrom. The lefty Baumann served a one-game suspension on Friday for his role in a Padres-Rockies brawl earlier this season, but has yet to make his Mets debut.

➤ Luis Guillorme collected his first major league hit with a secondinning single. The rookie infielder entered as a pinch hitter for deGrom.
