Ma’s baby-OD bust
Tragic tot found pain pills out in open: cops
A Staten Island mom who left her pain pills unattended was arrested Monday for the overdose death of her baby, who ingested them, law-enforcement sources said,
Leila Wade, 39, has been charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment, according to authorities.
She was arrested at about 6:15 p.m. Monday for the incident, which happened more than a year ago.
Joseph Abdul, the estranged father of 1-yearold Bianca Abdul, said authorities told him back in October that she died from ingesting her mom’s morphine and diazepam.
The 37-year-old unem- ployed Staten Island mechanic had feared his baby mama, Wade, was never going to be criminally charged.
“As Bianca’s father, I’m glad she was f inally ar- rested,” said Abdul, who said he had been limited to seven supervised visits with his baby Bianca due to a domestic prosecution against him.
“Finally, justice has been served.”
Bianca was found unresponsive by police at 8:05 a.m. on March 20, 2017, at the family’s home on Moreland Street, according to authorities.
Paramedics rushed her to Staten Island University Hospital’s North Campus, where she was pronounced dead.
At the time, police said “there were no obvious signs of trauma observed” on the baby.
In the investigation since the tragedy, cops found out that Wade had left her prescription pain medications out, where Bianca found them and swallowed them, according to law-enforcement sources.
Wade is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon.
