Give Yeshiva Students The Schools They Deserve

-

As a Rockland County resident, I have seen firsthand the destruction done to yeshiva students and the community as a whole (“Yeshiva education nearly ruined us,” May 13).

These students are getting a sub-par education, even by New York standards. The outside world has to continue to pay taxes to support these families. Meanwhile, politicians cater to them, due to their political might.

The result is a large, growing segment of the population that is illequipped for life in the 21st century. This does a disservice to the students, the state and the country. Glen Benjamin Airmont

The Post described some of the sad conditions in many yeshivas in the tri-state area.

However, a clear distinction needs to be made between these schools that offer little to no secular education, and other yeshivas or day schools that offer excellent and intense religious education as well as un- paralleled secular educations, taught by qualified and highly experienced teachers.

Students from these day schools are prepared to compete against the best of the best. They are then ready to take their places in society and contribute. Hindy Kierman East Brunswick, NJ

It is about time that tens of thousands of Jewish ultra-Orthodox kids in New York City are no longer deprived of their right to an education.

Yeshivas provide only minimal instruction in English, reading, history, science and math. Yet they get millions of dollars in aid because of political deals. That’s ridiculous.

Where is the Department of Education and Mayor de Blasio as advocates for the young? Keeping kids illiterate, poor and unable to cope in society is immoral. Manny Martin Manhattan

The Post’s article lists three cases of yeshiva boys from three different schools. Two of them are from the Chabad movement.

Many yeshiva boys go on to open Chabad centers all over the world and are successful.

They somehow have management skills, accounting skills and social skills and must raise money to cover the budget. Where do they get all these skills from, if not yeshivas? Benson Chanowitz Flatbush
