Flores will get shot at replacing Frazier

- By MIKE PUMA

MILWAUKEE — The Mets’ third-base carousel in Todd Frazier’s absence has stopped on Wilmer Flores’ name.

Normally limited to duty against lefty starters, Flores was in the Mets’ starting lineup Thursday against Brewers righthander Zach Davies, as manager Mickey Callaway searches for a dependable option at the position.

Flores drove in a pair of runs, with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth.

Neither Jose Reyes nor Luis Guillorme has provided that stability, and Flores at least brings a power bat to the equation.

The Mets are facing four righty starters in this series, and Flores could start at third base against each of them.

Frazier, who is nursing a left hamstring strain, traveled with the team, but hasn’t been cleared to begin running. Once Frazier passes a running test he will head to the minor leagues for rehab games to get his swing back.

Callaway will monitor Flores to ensure he can withstand the grind.

“The thing about it is he hasn’t played a ton of games in a row for a long time,” Callaway said. “So when he plays three or four he feels it, so we have to give him a day or two to recover and then get him back in there. We have got to build him up as he is going along.”

Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo are both on pace to surpass 100 innings pitched from the bullpen, but Callaway said the workload is not a concern given the number of days off built in to the schedule.

“I would be worried about it if we didn’t have the days off,” Callaway said. “I think the days off have skewed it. I just don’t look at it as game pitched. It’s games pitched in the number of days, so they have been adequately rested. If we hadn’t had the number of days off, what they’ve been asked to do would be egregious, but you have to count in those off days as games.”

Callaway noted that during this stretch, in which the Mets are playing 18 games in 17 days, neither multi-inning option is being used in the same manner as previously: Lugo had been limited to one inning in each of his past two appearances. Gsellman had pitched only one inning in three of his past four appearances.

Juan Lagares underwent surgery to repair the tear of the big toe plantar plate in his left foot. Lagares is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
