The fallen would love me: Trump

-

President Trump posted a widely criticized Memorial Day tweet Monday claiming that fallen vets would be “very happy” with the job he’s doing running the country.

“Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18 years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!” the president tweeted hours before laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

“OMG,” tweeted retired Gen. Michael Hayden, the former CIA and National Security Agency chief, in response.

Others objected to the use of “Happy Memorial Day.”

“Mr. President: My father was MIA in Vietnam for 30 years. I will visit him at Arlington today. There is nothing ‘happy’ about #MemorialDay,” tweeted retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton.

At Calvary Cemetery in Queens, visitors paying respects to veterans were also dismayed.

Vicky Steckel, 52, a makeup artist from Queens who was volunteering her time to place American flags at veterans’ graves, slammed the president.

“It’s always about him. It’s Trump,” she said. “It’s like we are living in a theater right now.”

At the Memorial Day parade in Queens, Army vet Mike Milonas, 55, called the tweet “tone-deaf.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s reelection campaign sent out a marketing e-mail about a 25percent off sale in honor of fallen military members. Shoppers were told to use the word “remember” to get their discount at checkout.
