Survives billboard fall

A worker tumbled off the Toshiba electronic billboard in Times Square Wednesday morning — but was spared a 20-story drop to the street when he landed on a narrow catwalk, authorities said.

The lucky laborer — who was identified by sources as Nicholas Russomanno — was replacing LED modules behind the sign at around 10:40 a.m. when he lost his footing and fell from a ladder, according to officials and a co-worker who witnessed the incident.

Russomanno fell 10 to 20 feet, but landed nearly unscathed on a ledge behind the sign.

A colleague called 911, and firefighters helped the 35-year-old into an elevator, said another coworker at Landmark Signs.

Russomanno was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a small cut on the elbow.

“He had two [LED modules] in his hands and because he was holding them, his elbow was out,” said the Landmark Signs worker, declining to give her name. “He fell and hit one of the bracings, and that’s how he cut his elbow.”

The Toshiba sign — which has served as the backdrop for New Year’s Eve ball drops since 2007 — is being taken down as part of a cost-cutting measure by the Japanese electronics titan, according to The Nikkei Asian Review.

Russomanno couldn’t be reached for comment.

“Thank God he fell in between . . . because if he’d fallen in front [of the sign] that would have been it,” said one worker.
