Lace ’em up! Shoeless Torres thrown out at 3rd

- By GEORGE A. KING III

BALTIMORE — Gleyber Torres had never lost a shoe running the bases until Friday night, when his left one got loose from his foot halfway between second and third base at Camden Yards.

“First time,’’ said Torres, who was thrown out attempting to stretch a fifthinning double into a triple, but was handicapped by the shoeless left foot. “When I lost the shoe it was a couple of seconds and I was out.’’

Since the Yankees beat the awful Orioles, 4-1, they could laugh about Torres losing a shoe. However, only when Torres saw the ball rolling along the leftfield wall did he accelerate around second.

When the head-first slide into third resulted in Torres being called out, the Yankees checked with replay guru Brett Weber and opted not to challenge.

“I don’t know, 50-50,’’ Tor- res said when asked if he was safe.

Torres drove in the Yankees’ first run with a thirdinning single that scored Neil Walker from second.

“Every day he gets two knocks,’’ Aaron Judge said of the 21-year-old Torres.

Thursday night’s rain out forced Boone to juggle his rotation a bit. While Sonny Gray, Masahiro Tanaka and Domingo German remained in their original order, CC Sabathia went from starting Sunday to pitching Tues- day against the Blue Jays.

That leaves Luis Severino to start the first game of Monday’s doubleheader in Detroit and the Yankees needing a starter for the nightcap.

“We’ll probably have someone else go in the second game of the doubleheader. CC will pitch in Toronto. That all could change though, looks like weather’s bad [Saturday]. Things could pop up and alter those plans. but as of right now we’ll have someone else go in the second game and CC is set to go first game Boone said.

Since the Yankees can add an extra body to the 25-man roster for the twinbill, it will be a pitcher. Giovanny Gallego, who is on the 40-man roster and has been working out of the bullpen at Triple-A Scranton/WilkesBarre, is a candidate. Justus Sheffield, the Yankees’ top pitching prospect, has made four starts for SWB and last worked on May 28. He isn’t on the 40-man roster. in Toronto,’’
