Time off couldn’t get Sanchez out of his slump

- By DAN MARTIN

BALTIMORE — Gary Sanchez was behind the plate Saturday for the first time since Tuesday.

The time off didn’t appear to have helped.

Sanchez, who was the DH Wednesday before Thursday’s game was rained out and he sat again Friday, hit fifth on Saturday and was a non-factor in an 8-5 win over the Orioles.

Hewent0-for-5 and has just two hits in his last 29 at-bats with no extra-base hits, five walks and nine strikeouts.

“I’m not worried at all,’’ Aaron Boone said of Sanchez’s slump. “I don’t worry about him and the bat. He’s born to hit. I’m more excited. I thought he was really good behind the plate [Saturday], leading our guys. He’s one of the last guys I worry about hitting-wise. I know over time, he’s gonna rake.”

Prior to the game, Boone said he hoped Sanchez’s recent schedule would allow him to rest the calf that cramped last week in Texas.

The offensive emergence of Aus- tin Romine has made it possible for Boone to give Sanchez more time off, but the Yankees expect significantly more from their All-Star catcher, whose woes at the plate this season have largely been overshadowed by Giancarlo Stanton’s well-publicized struggles.

➤ The Yankees got a scare when Gleyber Torres was drilled in the right wrist during an at-bat in the sixth inning.

The second baseman, who was named AL Rookie of the Month for May, stayed in the game after being hit by the 94 mph sinker from Miguel Castro.

“Obviously, it’s scary any time you see it around there, but it looks like he checked out OK,” Boone said. “He had no issues staying in the game. We dodged a bullet there, obviously.” ➤ Jordan Montgomery (elbow strain) threw off flat ground again Saturday. He’s increasing his workload, according to Boone and “responding well.”

Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Montgomery is scheduled to throw again Sunday, but the Yankees won’t really know how close he is to returning to the rotation until he starts throwing bullpens.

Adam Warren (back) threw a bullpen Friday and “came out really well,” according to Boone. The right-hander could be activated in the “next couple days.”
