Cavs’ Thompson won’t be suspended for Game 1 scuffle

- By FRED KERBER

OAKLAND, Calif. — There was speculation of a suspension. But that is all it turned out to be, just speculation. So Tristan Thompson is good to go for the Cavaliers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

“Happy to be able to play,” Thompson said Saturday. “The NBA’s got to do what it’s got to do in terms of fining. ... People said [suspension] was a possibility but at the end of the day, I did what I had to do in terms of speaking to the NBA and whatnot. But they made the right call by letting me play.”

In the closing seconds of Game 1 on Thursday, Thompson had been assessed a Flagrant 2 foul which warrants an immediate ejection, for a foul on Shaun Livingston. The Warriors’ Draymond Green, as is his custom, weighed in verbally. Thompson shoved a ball in his face.

On Friday, the league fined Thompson $25,000 for failing to leave the court but also downgraded the foul to a Flagrant 1.

Green said he was not surprised at the lack of a suspension.

“Not at all. What should he have gotten suspended for?” Green said. “I’d rather a guy not get suspended. Them suspending somebody else don’t make me feel good. I don’t want nobody to get suspended. You know, that does nothing for us or for me. ... I’m happy he only got a $25,000 fine. It’s not that much, number one. We’re out here trying to feed our families, so I don’t like to see people lose money, and I don’t like to see people get suspended.” ➤ Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Andre Iguodala remains “doubtful” for Game 2 Sunday with his leg injury.

“It’s just day-to-day. We don’t think about what’s going to happen later on,” Kerr said. “It’s just each day he’s getting a little better. He’s still doubtful for tomorrow, but making some strides.”
