Trump strategy on Kim summit

- By BOB FREDERICKS

A confident President Trump said Thursday that “attitude” was more important than preparation for next week’s highstakes summit with Kim Jong-un — but added that he was well-prepared anyway.

“I think I’m very well-prepared. I don’t think I have to prepare very much. It’s about attitude, it’s about willingness to get things done, but I think I’ve been preparing for this summit for a long time,“Trump said at the White House during an appearance with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (right).

“So this isn’t a question of preparation, it’s a question of whether or not people want it to happen, and we’ll know that very quickly.”

The commander in chief also said the sitdown with the North Korean dictator would likely be only the beginning of the process — and dismissed a suggestion that it would amount to just a photo op.

“It’s gonna be much more than a photo op. I think it’s a process. I think it’s not a one- meeting deal. It would be wonderful if it were. They’ve got a lot of enemies out there, a lot of dislike, a lot of hatred between countries,” he said.

“At a minimum, we’ll start with perhaps a good relationship, and that’s something that’s very important toward the ultimate making of a deal. I would love to say it could happen in one deal, and maybe it can,” he said — but only if Kim agrees to total denuclearization, something the rogue regime is unlikely to do, according to foreign policy experts.

“They have to denuke. If they don’t denuclearize, that will not be acceptable. We cannot take sanctions off. The sanctions are extraordinarily powerful,” Trump added.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said later that Kim had told him he was willing to negotiate denuclearization, and insisted Trump was well prepared for the summit.

Pompeo also took a shot at Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who had said that Kim “got on his hands and knees and begged for” the summit after Trump canceled it.

“I know Rudy. Rudy doesn’t speak for the administration when it comes to this negotiation and this set of issues,” Pompeo said.

Asked about ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman — a pal of the North Korean strongman who will be in Singapore during the summit — Trump said he was not invited by the White House.
