GOP bigs warn FBI, DOJ
GOP House leaders Sunday threatened action against top officials in the Justice Department and FBI if they fail to turn over documents this week related to their investigations into the 2016 presidential election.
“There’s going to be hell to pay by Wednesday,” Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Nunes has requested documents related to the federal warrant against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, which helped spark the probe into whether Team Trump colluded with Russia.
If the documents aren’t available by Monday, Nunes said the House is prepared to move forward with a variety of measures against the DOJ, which is headed by Republicans Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Rod Rosenstein.
“We can hold in contempt. We can pass sense of Congress resolutions,” the California representative said. “We can impeach — I think we’re getting close to there.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan, Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte and Nunes huddled Friday with the leadership of the FBI and DOJ.
Justice officials agreed to get the House members documents this week, which Nunes interpreted to mean Monday.
Gowdy (R-SC) said Ryan made it clear there will be consequences if the House doesn’t receive the documents.
“We’re going to get compliance or the House of Representatives is going to use its full arsenal of constitutional weapons to gain compliance,” he said.
