Popovich, Kawhi meet

-

Gregg Popovich and Kawhi Leonard met Tuesday, but it’s not expected to lead to a long-term reconciliation, according to an ESPN report.

Sources told the website that Popovich traveled to Southern California and met with Leonard before Thursday’s NBA draft.

Leonard originally did not want to sit down with the Spurs coach, according to the report. He believes the team mishandled his quadriceps injury and is still upset with public comments Tony Parker and Popovich made that he felt weren’t supportive of him, league sources said.

The Spurs star forward — who can become an unrestricted free agent in 2019 — is looking for a trade to Los Angeles, preferably the Lakers, league sources said. Despite the meeting, Leonard has pri- vately said he no longer wants to play with San Antonio, but it’s unlikely the team would be motivated to work out a deal with the Lakers, the sources said.

Officially, the Spurs say their priority is to work through their issues with Leonard, but, according to sources, they have reached out to rival executives to see what potential offers they could get for the forward. The team, however, hasn’t given guidance on what they would want in any potential trade.

Leonard — who played just nine games last season — was one of the top players in the NBA in 2016-17, where he averaged 25.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Despite Leonard’s contentious relationship with the team, he is eligible to sign a five-year, $219 million super-maximum contract with the Spurs this summer.
