Callaway says MRI revealed ‘strain’ in ailing Bruce’s hip
DENVER — Jay Bruce’s soreness that landed him on the disabled list has at least some rudimentary explanation.
An MRI exam on Wednesday revealed the Mets outfielder has a “strain” in his hip, according to manager Mickey Callaway, and a course of treatment is under discussion.
“There is definitely something in there that showed up and we haven’t gotten past that yet,” Callaway said before the Mets’ 10-8 loss to the Rockies Wednesday night.
Jose Reyes received the start at shortstop, going 1-for-3 with two walks, as Callaway tries to find at-bats for the veteran infielder. Reyes’ bunt single in the ninth inning on Sunday in Arizona started the Mets’ winning rally.
“[Reyes] played a great game the other day, and I would like to get him in the lineup as much as possible,” Callaway said.
Amed Rosario will start Thursday’s series finale. Rosario entered play 7-for-21 (.333) over his previous five games and singled in a pinch-hit appearance Wednesday.
AJ Ramos underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair the labrum in his shoulder. The righthander posted a 6.41 ERA in 28 appearances for the Mets, and Callaway said the injury definitely affected his performance.
“He felt like he could go get the velocity when he tried, but he wouldn’t have been able to sustain that so he had to back off that to try to be effective,” Callaway said.
Chris Flexen arrived from Triple-A Las Vegas to give the Mets a fresh bullpen arm. Hansel Robles, who surrendered two earned runs over 1 2/3 innings the previous night, was optioned.
Early impressions on reliever Chris Beck, who arrived last week from the White Sox after he was claimed off waivers, have been positive. The right-hander allowed one run in each of his first two appearances for the Mets, spanning 3 2/3 innings.
“I think he flashes a plus slider,” Callaway said. “His first game, his times to home were a little slow, he got a little exposed there, but he’s interesting.”
The Mets had a hit in 14 straight innings beginning in the eighth on Sunday and continuing through the third on Tuesday. It was the team’s longest such streak since May 2014, when the Mets went 16 straight innings with a hit.
