Trump’s Border Flip-Flop: Fixing a Complex Problem
President Trump’s executive order flip-flop on the separation of illegalimmigrant families crossing the border shows who is running the country: Ivanka and Melania Trump (“Fine, I’ll clean up my mess,” June 21).
Similar to his attempted DACA deal with Sen. Chuck Schumer and the Democrats, this is the second time that Trump has changed his tune on his No. 1 campaign issue. Trump’s actions don’t match his rhetoric. Andrew Delaney Manhattan
Trump was elected because of his promises to make the country better.
We wanted him to end DACA, build a border wall, end chain migration and deport lawbreaking illegals.
None of the previous presidents were able to solve the immigration problem. And Trump has quickly reversed the policy that has separated illegal immigrant’s children from their parents.

Processing the vast number of illegal crossings at our southern border requires time and temporary housing, and the gated warehouses in use under Trump were used under President Barack Obama.

Prior to Trump’s “zero tolerance” strategy, those crossing the border were given court dates and let go under a “catch and release” policy.
The trouble is that most of these immigrants just disappeared into the American woodwork, never to be seen again.
A much better policy would be to start vetting folks at the border in a more orderly fashion by having them wait to be vetted inside Mexico. No need to separate children from their families. Sal Giarratani Boston, Mass.
Bruce Springsteen said what is happening at our border is “so shockingly and disgracefully inhumane and un-American that it is simply enraging.”
I agree. Apparently, so does Trump, who enacted an executive order to halt the separations. This is really just a temporary fix. But there is one permanent way to fix this heartbreaking scene: Build the wall.
Isn’t the most humane solution to send a message that if people want to come to America, they need to do so legally?
Why should uninvited people be allowed to gain entry to our country just by showing up at the border? Eugene R. Drug and sex traffickers regularly cross our borders, ruining our cities, and deported criminal illegal immigrants repeatedly return and are protected in sanctuary cities.
We have to vet parents and children coming in. We need to know who is coming in and why, and we have to check for contagious diseases and prove who is related to whom. D. M. Diana Greeley, Pa.
Trump’s executive order is a really good idea. I don’t understand why the Democrats are still screaming about it.
Unless it was never about children being traumatized by being torn from their mothers’ loving arms.
Perhaps it was about creating a diversion from DOJ’s inspector general’s report, which was embarrassing for the Democrats.
