Ending With a Whimper

-

The Legislature quit for the year early Thursday with a lot of unfinished business — at the public’s expense. A last-minute lobbying blitz by Google killed anti-revenge-porn legislation that the Assembly had finally passed after years of stalling — by getting the state Senate to suddenly abandon the cause.

New York City will have to shut down school-zone red-light cameras because the Senate also didn’t act on that measure. (To be fair, Majority Leader John Flanagan’s spokesman noted that Mayor de Blasio never called about his priorities: “We haven’t heard from him in months. Until today.”)

A late drive to crack down on LawCash and other predatory legal lenders passed the Senate 60-1 but died in the Assembly.

The Senate also punted the “red flag” bill to let family members get guns out of the hands of troubled loved ones.

Gov. Cuomo didn’t help by trying to add teachers to those who can request such restraining orders — then doing public rallies for it, rather than sitting down to twist arms to win half a loaf.

Then again, Cuomo was notably scarce in the final days of the session.

He could redeem himself: The Legislature reconvened for a day last year to tie up loose ends. The gov could call lawmakers back next week to get at least a few simple things done — even if it means taking the time to crack legislative leaders’ heads.
