Gardner OK after crashing into wall

- By KEN DAVIDOFF AND DAN MARTIN

PHILADELPHIA — The Yankees already have seen outfielder Clint Frazier go down with a concussion earlier this season, but they believe Brett Gardner won’t join that list, even after a scary-looking play Wednesday night.

Gardner made a great leaping catch in left field of Carlos Santana’s line drive, hitting the Citizens Bank Park wall — first his right arm, then apparently his head and neck — as he secured the ball. After making the catch, Gardner tumbled backward onto the ground, sat for a moment, stood up, shook his head and relayed the ball back into the infield. He stayed in for the duration of the game.

“I’ll feel good tomorrow,” vowed Gardner, who said following the Yankees’ 3-0 loss to the Phillies that he didn’t feel any aftereffects from the play.

The Yankees didn’t come on the field to examine Gardner after the play, the first out of the third inning.

“I think we just felt comfortable with seeing it, seeing the replay, seeing his reaction that he was OK,” Aaron Boone said. He added there was “kind of a non-verbal communication” with Gardner from the Yankees’ dugout, on the third-base side, to confirm his safety.

After the half-inning ended, Gardner said, assistant athletic trainer Mike Schuk greeted him at the bottom step of the dugout to check on him.

“He asked me if I was good,” Gardner said. “I said, yeah. He left me alone.”

Asked if the play shook him up, Gardner said: “Not really. Any time you run into something like that, it kind of stuns you for a second. Once I got up and realized where I was, recognized [Aaron] Hicks right there [in center field], I felt like I was pretty good.”

Frazier suffered a concussion in February on a defensive play during a Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, and the Yankees didn’t immediately remove him from that game. He missed the rest of spring training.
