After OBJ shows off power, Judge one-ups him

Perhaps Aaron Judge was just making sure Odell Beckham Jr. didn’t show him up. The Giants wide receiver took batting practice in The Bronx on Friday afternoon with the Yankees’ star-studded group of Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres, and hit a home run out to left field with a celebratory dance to follow. A few hours later, Judge crushed his 21st home run of the year, one of the Yankees’ four long balls in an emphatic 8-1 win over the Red Sox.

Judge’s two-run shot came off his college teammate at Fresno State, Red Sox reliever Justin Haley, a rocket into right field. It extended his on-base streak to 16 games and he has a slash line of .305/.400/.542 during that stretch.

While the right fielder has continued to mash at Yankee Stadium — now hitting .356 with a 1.207 OPS, 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 41 home games — Judge was more impressed by the pregame show put on by Beckham.

“It was fun,” Judge said. “He’s got a good swing. First couple rounds, he kind of warmed up. He clipped one, got it out.”

Beckham took batting practice with the Rays last month while they were in Anaheim playing the Angels and hit his fair share of deep balls there, too. So it came as little surprise to Judge that he flashed some power again Friday.

“I saw him when he hit BP in Ana- heim, he hit a couple out,” Judge said. “I knew he’d get one or two out. It’s cool hanging out with him and get a chance to pick his brain a little bit.”

Beckham, who has given assurances he will be at Giants training camp even as he enters the final year of his contract, was in full uniform on the field with a backwards cap. He proved his surgically repaired ankle — broken in Week 5 last fall — is feeling fine, even taking a “Happy Gilmore” run up to one swing in the cage.
