Teacher ‘lap’se in judgment
A Queens teacher caught in a dark classroom with a girl student allegedly sitting on his lap was spared his $90,500-a-year job but slapped with a “final warning,” records show.
Farzad Ghelichkhani, 36, a biology teacher at John Adams HS in Ozone Park, was removed from the school after the May 2017 incident.
At a disciplinary hearing, he claimed the girl had asked to speak with him privately about personal problems and wanted the lights out because “she had a headache,” records show.
A suspicious dean quickly unlocked the classroom door and barged in, trying to catch the teacher redhanded. She testified that she saw Ghelichkhani’s legs “wide apart” and the girl “standing between his legs.”
Ghelichkhani testified that the girl “tripped and fell” onto his lap while showing him an injured finger and her “butt may have hit my leg.”
Hearing officer Judith Pierce said Ghelichkhani should never have let the girl sit or stand so close to him in a room with the door locked.
But she rejected a Department of Education bid to fire the teacher, instead suspending him for six months without pay.
“Future violations will result in termination,” she warned.
Ghelichkani, now in a pool of teachers who serve as substitutes, maintains his innocence.
