Big man, Knicks agree to $1.6M deal

- By MARC BERMAN

The Knicks apparently really like center Luke Kornet.

The Post has learned the Knicks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal for $1.6 million for Kornet, who was a restricted free agent. The $1.6 million stands as more than his minimum, as the Knicks dished out his non-Bird exception.

Kornet, the 3-point-shooting former Vanderbilt star, was on a two-way deal with the Knicks last season after going undrafted. He played in 20 games, mostly late in the season, and shot 35 percent from 3-point range.

During recent workouts with David Fizdale, Kornet said the new Knicks coach is trying to get him to evolve his game and not be a onedimensional big-man shooter.

“He wants everyone to be able to drive and finish,” Kornet told The Post in a phone interview. “It’s something I’ve worked on a lot — being able to finish better. My 3-point shooting is the center of my offensive game, and I want to be great at that. But the finishing aspect would really take me to the next level.”

The quick signing is a clear indication free-agent backup center Kyle O’Quinn won’t return, with the 76ers reportedly showing heavy interest.

Kornet wasn’t certain how long the free-agent process would take, and sources said a couple of teams expressed preliminary interest entering Sunday’s first full day of free agency.

“The Knicks have definitely showed interest with their development,” Kornet said. “They’ve enjoyed having me around. I had a great year here. I would love to be back in New York. I’m kind of waiting to hear. Another year here would be something I’d be excited to have.”

Placing Kornet on the 15man roster leaves room for two two-way contracts, with undrafted shooting guard Allonzo Trier and power forward Isaiah Hicks the top candidates. Hicks was on a two-way deal last season after being undrafted out of North Carolina.
