Another council Dem backs Nixon
A third City Council Democrat has snubbed Gov. Cuomo and endorsed Cynthia Nixon.
“Politics as usual are not getting it done. So we do it different in north Brooklyn,” Councilman Antonio Reynoso said outside JHS 50 in Williamsburg on Thursday.
He joins Councilmen Carlos Manchaca of Brooklyn and Jimmy Van Bramer of Queens in backing the twoterm governor’s primary challenger.
Reynoso likened Nixon’s campaign to his own successful run against former Brooklyn Democratic Chair Vito Lopez in the 2013 race for his council seat.
“Cynthia Nixon is running on her own accord,” he said. “Her own conscience is leading her to this point, and in north Brooklyn, we know a little bit about running against establishment politics . . . We know what it is like to run against the machine.”
Reynoso argued Cuomo has failed to address transit problems, pass the state’s DREAM Act providing college financial aid for children of immi grants and enact campaign-finance reform, tougher rent regulations or more equitable school funding.
Covering Greenpointeen and Williamsburg, Reynoso’s district in cludes many young progressives.
Cuomo is not without supporters in the council. Last week, he won the backing of Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Manhattan).
