Women p.r. a power tale
Women are making a breakthrough in fintech — at least when it comes to financial public relations.
Bevel PR, launched last year by Jessica Schaefer, a communications alum from Steve Cohen’s hedge fund Point72 Asset Management, has quickly amassed an enviable client base of fintech players.
Most recently the New York firm signed Quona Capital, which manages a $141 million global fintech fund that works to improve access to financial services in the developing world.
And so far, the nine-person financial p.r. firm — with offices in New York City and Los Angeles — is all female.
“I think the talent funnel for women is there — you just have to nurture it. Anyone who is intellectually curious can be trained,” Schaefer told The Post, adding that many of her team members entered p.r. after careers in finance.
Soon after Bevel’s February 2017 launch, it landed Alan Patricof’s venture capital firm Greycroft as a client as well as French-American venture capitalist Claude Wasserstein of Fine Day Ventures.
Bevel is also close to winning business from longertenured financial p.r. firms, Schaeffer said, declining to give further details.
“Some clients were paying very high fees and getting little results,” Schaefer said, noting that her firm looks to make relevant business introductions for her clients in addition to focusing solely on media placements.
The key has been her team’s ability to understand the complex financial world her clients operate in and deliver.
“I always felt like there was a lack of institutional quality in fintech p.r.,” Schaeffer said, touting her long-term interest in financial markets.
Schaeffer honed her fintech chops during her tenure at Point72, where she led communications for the firm’s venture capital arm — Point72 Ventures — in addition to serving as vice president of corporate communications at of the hedge fund, which was then a family office.
