Anti-Catholic Bigotry: A Religious Test for Barrett

THE ISSUE: Democrats’ criticism of Supreme Court candidate Amy Coney Barrett’s strong Catholic faith.

-

Why are Democrats making such a big deal of the fact that Supreme Court candidate Amy Coney Barrett is a Roman Catholic (“Democrats’ Bigotry Against GOP Judges,” Seth Lipsky, PostOpinion, July 6)?

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, appointed by President Barack Obama, is a Catholic, as are Justices Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, John Roberts and the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan are Jewish. I didn’t hear any outrage regarding their religion.

Justices should be appointed based on their qualifications and their commitment to uphold the laws of our land as written in the Constitution. Let’s cut out this needless hatred on both sides. Joann Mirone Old Greenwich, Conn.

The left intends to attack any Catholic candidate purely on religious beliefs — that is vile and disgusting. In fact, it vio- lates Catholics’ constitutional rights.

This should prove to everyone that the left judges each person based on their position on abortion. Roe v. Wade needs to be overturned. Patrick Grant Rocky Point

I concur with Lipsky that religious tests for public office are unfair and unconstitutional.

Yet I recall that President George W. Bush boasted that he intended to nominate judges who believed “our rights are derived from God.”

There was no reaction from the conservative media that I can recall, the Constitution’s prohibition against religious tests for public office notwithstanding.

The Supreme Court is now top-heavy with conservative Catholic justices. I am sure that Trump will nominate either a conservative Catholic or Protestant to the bench, and certainly never an atheist, Reform Jew, Muslim, Unitarian or Hindu. Dennis Middlebrooks Brooklyn

A photo of the existing Supreme Court shows it is not balanced in terms of gender or race, which should be considered.

The nominee must be of the highest standard possible, with a clear history of accurately interpreting the law and enacting it. Dennis Fitzgerald Melbourne, Australia
