Don’s latest ‘meddle’ fumble umble

President Trump on Wednesday appeared to say Russia was no longer targeting the United States — flatly contradicting his intelligence chief, who days ago said “the warning lights are blinking red again.”

“No,” the president declared at the White House, responding to a reporter’s question about whether Vladimir Putin’s regime still had the US and America’s elections in its sights.

That clashed with comments by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who last week said Russia remained a huge threat to national security.

“The digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack,” Coats said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders later Wednesday denied that Trump’s “no” referred to Russian meddling — though most of those in the room believed it did, noting that the commander in chief was looking the reporter right in the eye.

“I had a chance to speak with the president after his comments and the president was saying no to answering [more] questions,” she said at a press briefing.

Sanders also said Trump would meet with his team to consider Putin’s bold request to have ex-President Barack Obama’s Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul interrogated by Russian prosecutors.

The Russian leader made the suggestion after offering to have Russians work with special counsel Robert Mueller to grill the 12 Russian spies Mueller indicted last Friday for election meddling — an unprecedented offer that Trump called “incredible.”

Trump insisted Wednesday he was the “toughest” president in US history when it came to dealing with Russia — continuing to push the message that he didn’t cave in to Putin earlierier this week.

“We’re doingng very well, probably as well as anybodynybody has ever done with Russia. And there’s been no president everver as tough as I have been on Russia,”sia,” he said, seated in the Cabinet Room with arms crossed.

In an interview with “CBS Evening News” Wednesday, Trump reiterated that he agrees with Coats’ assessment about Russia’s meddling.

“Well, I accept. I mean, he’s an expert,” Trump said of Coats. “This is what he does. He’s been doing a very good job.”
