US bigs in darkark on Trump-Putin pacts
Russia’s US ambassador said Wednesday that President Trump and Vladimir Putin had reached “important verbal agreements” during their summit in Finland earlier this week — agreements about which American officials reportedly were completely unaware.
The handshake deals covered a range of subjects — including arms-control — Anatoly Antonov, told reporters in Moscow.
Antonov also said the United States and Russia are considering joint military efforts to fight terrorism in Syria.
“It seemed to me, my impression was that the US side listened . . . with interest,” Antonov said.
Putin and Trump also discussed a deal Russia has with Is- rael to keep Iranian proxy forces — loyal to Syrianyrian dictator Bashar al-Assad — at least 50 miles away from its borderrder with the Israeli-Israelicontrolled Golan Heights.
However, senior US military officials laterer Wednesday said they had noo information about any such deals,als, according to The Washington Post.
Meanwhile,e, Antonov also said he was stunnedned so many Ameri-Americans were criticalcritical of Trump for meeting withh Putin.
“Even in talkingalking with you now, I am afraid to say something posi-positive about thethe American president,” he said,aid, “because when American journalistsournalists or policy-policymakers read mymy interview, they’ll say Russia iss again meddling.”
