Subway squads will bring their bats to bronx

Round 2 of the annual home-and-home rivalry showcase featuring the Yankees and Mets begins Friday night at the Stadium. It’s a great opportunity for us to recap the first few months of the season as we prepare to find betting edges down the stretch.

What jumps out immediately about New York City baseball is that the teams have been reverse images since mid-April. After a stunning 11-1 start that turned out to be one of the biggest red herrings ever, the Mets are 28-54. The Yankees started slowly — 6-7 out of the gate — but have been a perpetually red-hot 56-26 since.

In essence, the Yankees have played like a 110win team since midApril, the Mets like a 110loss team.

Betting markets have been slow to match these realities. The Yankees are plus double digits in betting units since the slow start (plus nine units overall). The Mets are minus 26 units since the first dozen games. Fading the Mets has been a virtual ATM machine for three months.

This reverse image theme is also holding true in terms of noticeable “Under” trends against the totals. One team plays Unders at home, the other on the road. Mets hitters have struggled badly at Citi Field, helping drive a 2031 mark toward the Under. The Yankees are 19-27-3 to the Under away from home because the offense has been much less likely to explode.

Does that mean higherscoring games this weekend in The Bronx than we saw the first time around? Let’s hope so! At Citi Field, scoring sums landed on five, seven and two. Both offenses will be in their best scoring scenarios Friday through Sunday.
