BLASIO A ‘RED’ MENACE

Traffic lights, that is

- By YOAV GONEN

Mayor de Blasio proved on Monday that the most dangerous place in New York City is between him and a TV camera — especially if you’re a motorist.

De Blasio — who likes to tout his Vision Zero trafficsafety crackdown — showed zero vision for the safety of drivers on Staten Island when his official car’s lights were used to blow through a red light at an intersection to arrive more quickly to a 2 p.m. press conference.

The mayor’s two-vehicle caravan became a road menace when it suddenly crossed a double-yellow line, drove on the wrong side of Arden Avenue and raced through the red light at Forest Green.

It all happened in full view of a van carrying reporters to the event — a public talk on Lyme disease at Blue Heron Park.

At the press conference, the mayor detailed steps the city is taking to fight the illness for TV cameras from NY1. But despite his earlier hurrying, he had no time to take questions from reporters.

City Hall and the NYPD were just as tight-lipped later, when asked about Hizzoner’s dangerous haste.

The rush came as de Bla- sio has been drubbing opponents of a plan to extend the placement of speed cameras around some public and private schools.

The program is scheduled to shutter in a matter of days if Albany legislators don’t take action, despite evidence that the cameras slow down drivers.

It’s far from the first time the mayor’s security detail has been spotted zooming him around town without regard to red lights, stop signs and speed limits.

On Feb. 6, 2015, the mayor’s convoy pulled almost the same move as it did Monday — driving on the wrong side of a two-way road to bypass a line of vehicles stopped at a red light to get the tardy mayor to a press conference.

Just two months into Hizzoner’s first term at City Hall, his vehicles were spotted rolling through stop signs and speeding by CBS cameras and reporters.

That was days after he announced one of his signature initiatives, Vision Zero, to reduce traffic and pedestrian deaths.

At the time, the mayor pointed to “security protocols” and punted questions about the traffic infractions to the NYPD.

“We take very seriously the NYPD protocols, the NYPD training, so please talk to them,” he said then.
