Trump’s Twitter Threat: Keeping Tehran on Its Toes

-

President Trump is rightfully shocked and concerned at the inflammatory comments that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made concerning the United States (“We Have Leverage Over Iran — Use It,” Rich Lowry, PostOpinion, July 24).

But I wish that our president would prioritize peaceful conflict resolution, rather than attempt to preserve his rough-and-tumble image.

The United States needs to be forceful when dealing with national-security threats. But our president should try to defend our nation with a level head. Zane Chowdhry Vancouver, Wash.

The Trump administration would be wellserved to keep up maximum pressure on the Iranian regime.

Sanctions were doing a number on the Iranian economy when the Obama administration decided to let Tehran off the mat and pay it billions in the process.

The Iranian population is demanding jobs and opportunities, while the mullahs try to expand their influence in the re- gion. This is not sustainable, and something is bound to give as unrest continues.

The current White House recognizes this and should see this strategy through. Peter Kelly Hazlet, NJ

If “pot calling the kettle black” Trump had any shame, he’d be too embarrassed to accuse anyone of “demented words of death and violence.”

As a candidate, Trump bragged that he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone without losing any votes,” not to mention announcing to thou- sands at a rally that he’d like to punch a protester in the face. Maybe it’s Trump who ought to “be cautious.” Richard Siegelman Plainview

The president should help the Iranian population get rid of that evil regime.

The recent demonstrations in Iran are evidence that the population wants a regime change.

The fact that Trump is standing with the people of Iran is not only exemplary but a breath of fresh air. David Yazdan Monmouth Beach, NJ

Trump’s comments suggesting that the United States would be willing to start an all-out war over a simple threat — came as a shock.

The United States is not like most other countries as we have some of the most sophisticated firepower in the world.

With this power comes a responsibility to avoid war and bloodshed — not promote it. Nameer Bhatti Blue Bell, Pa.
