It’s time to mock and roll

The slow clap was only the start. It greeted Sam Darnold as he ran out to the practice field Monday for the first time as a signed quarterback for the Jets, and there’s surely more grief to come from his veteran teammates as training camp moves forward.

“We’ll see,” wide receiver Jermaine Kearse said. “He might have to stand up and sing a song or something like all the rookies. But we’re excited to have him back.”

With the No. 3 draft pick’s contract f inally signed, sealed and delivered, Darnold began taking snaps with the rest of his teammates in their second padded practice of camp. The 21-year-old wound up missing three practices, but his teammates were happy to have him on the field, even if they showed it by giving him a hard time.

When Darnold completed one of his first passes, a small crowd of fans in attendance clapped and cheered. A teammate got on him about how much they love him.

And when Darnold finally got under center for his first action in 11-on-11 team drills, there was more than one member of the defense pointing out the “fresh meat” — even if the red jersey Darnold donned meant nobody could touch him.

Of course, there was the slow clap that started his practice, with Jamal Adams and Josh McCown seemingly leading the charge.

“We were just messing around with him, gave him a little slow clap,” defensive end Leonard Williams said. “I think it was just more of welcoming him back and also just a thing the guys do. We mess with each other a lot. We were like, ‘Oh, he finally made it.’”

Todd Bowles said he only told Darnold he was late.

Darnold participated in rookie camp and in the team’s minicamp earlier in the spring, but his teammates were looking forward to getting back to work with him now that the pads are on and more of the playbook has been installed.

“It means a lot — not just because it’s specific to Sam and we’re both Trojans and he’s a firstround pick,” said Williams, a fellow USC product. “But also just because it’s nice to have everybody that’s going to be here for the season and working together and going through this process together at the same time.”
